Google DeepMind loses its chief executive and its chief scientist on the same day
Google spent the past year buying scale, and this week it lost the two people most associated with building the science. The lab now reports one level closer to Pichai, which reads as Alphabet pulling AI from a semi-independent research unit into the core.
Demis Hassabis moves from Google DeepMind CEO to chairman, adding Alphabet chief scientist and keeping Isomorphic Labs. Jeff Dean leaves after 27 years to found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation Google will invest in and supply cloud to, while CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu becomes senior VP of the lab reporting to Sundar Pichai.
