OpenAI claims a Navier-Stokes blow-up proof, and a credit fight lands on top of it
The proof covers the forced version of the equations, not the unforced version the Clay Institute prize actually specifies, and Clay has not ruled. Terence Tao called the approach remarkable without endorsing the claim, and warned that labs able to throw compute at a rumour change what researchers are willing to share early.
OpenAI says an internal model more capable than GPT-6 Astra produced a proof that 3D Navier-Stokes can blow up in finite time. NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster says OpenAI knew of his parallel work, took the approach, and pressed him to drop co-author Levent Alpoege because Alpoege works at Anthropic.
